About

Inspiration, resilience and honor swirl about the pixelated grandeur of Catalyst Valley. Some come to learn, others just to look. All are welcome to explore a place where photography, travel, food, great organic coffee, and vibrant health are celebrated. Luckily, it's an informal place so don't mind all the low-fi pix scattered about.

Meal of the Day

I’m reluctant to share this. Ego gets the better of most folks in gyms (and in all things surrounding fitness). It should be emphasized that being strong is not a marker of real health. I promise I’ll share my A1c when I get health insurance. The point is I’d like to focus the attention elsewhere:

I am sharing this as a simple n=1 validation of four things: the remarkable power of sleep, the value of stress management, the ease of an 80-20 approach to the paleo diet, and the simple effectiveness of Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength

I can babble endlessly about this stuff but sometimes just seeing a 440 pound deadlift by a wholly typical 172 pound 41 year old speaks more eloquently than random ruminations or ridiculous rants.

NOTE: I know it’s not pretty. Cut me some slack. It’s the most I’ve ever lifted and this isn’t meant to be instructional.

BONUS: I love the Sarah McLachlan soundtrack provided by the gym’s fabulous music programmers). :-)

» The Paleolithic Solution – Episode 14

I had a multi-day discussion with a friend about many of the topics discussed in this podcast. After listening to it I immediately sent him this link. While Episode 14 was his introduction to the podcast, it’s was as good a place to start as any. And because so many of the topic discussed were so timely, I just chalked it up to kismet.

In particular, there’s a moment in there that reinforced the sincerity of their logical, science-based, client-proven practice. I appreciated such candor.

Maybe everyone who cares can start here and go back to Episode 1 for full immersion.

This isn’t flashy stuff either. It’s just two trainers/educators talking about nitty-gritty paleo details. Audio glitches abound (which I’d say is perfectly fitting for a Skype-recorded podcast about Paleolithic nutrition). But the information presented is top notch. I am grateful to have it on my phone for repeated listening.
