About

Inspiration, resilience and honor swirl about the pixelated grandeur of Catalyst Valley. Some come to learn, others just to look. All are welcome to explore a place where photography, travel, food, great organic coffee, and vibrant health are celebrated. Luckily, it's an informal place so don't mind all the low-fi pix scattered about.

BILL MOYERS JOURNAL | Michael Pollan Interview, Pt. 1 (via PBS) I could post part two separately but here’s a link instead. And for those who prefer to read, here’s the transcript of the entire show. Love PBS.

This is the single best interview I’ve seen with Michael Pollan. He doesn’t come across as anti-meat here either which is why I am often irked. Growing grains and legumes to feed cows is so profoundly stupid, I put it higher on my list of peeves than he does. So be it.

There are so many subtle and nuanced issues in the albatros of agribusiness, and food production that only an hour-long discussion can begin to address them.  In the end, Pollan is a wonderful voice for real, practical improvements in our food system. Much of which is in our hands. I like that. Do you have plans for a garden this year? Who’s your farmer baby?

“ Farm policy is “a welfare program for the megafarms that use the most fuel, water and pesticides; emit the most greenhouse gases; grow the most fattening crops; hire the most illegals; and depopulate rural America. „

» Michael Pollan on The Daily Show

Cheap doesn’t mean it’s without cost. I’ve said it before and Michael Pollan says it again on The Daily Show. (running time: 3:41) YouTube.com had it but Viacom’s copyright lawyers yanked it.

“ The truth is that agriculture is the most destructive thing humans have done to the planet, and more of the same won’t save us. The truth is that agriculture requires the wholesale destruction of entire ecosystems. The truth is also that life isn’t possible without death, that no matter what you eat, someone has to die to feed you. „

» Soy Online Service

A comprehensive citizen-sponsored site getting the word out about the dangers of soy. A good clearinghouse.

From their site:

“We do not seek the destruction of the soy industry or to stop people eating soy.  We have no desire to stop you being Vegan or to cause you to switch to dairy products.  Rather we seek to expose the deceit of the major soy companies and to uncover the truth about soy products.  We do this by providing you with factual material that you can read for yourself, so that in the future you can make an informed choice about what you eat.”

Information is power.

There’s been a fair amount of news around this creepy meat processing plant. Coincidently, it’s one I swung by on the Vespa Tour just so I could make this photo. Tom Philpott breaks it down with flare and includes a great clip from Food Inc. made in the same location.
